Civilization

Civilization, in contrast to culture seems to imply urbanization and rather strict division of labour. I guess this is very beneficial in many ways, and I certainly appreciate many of the qualities of modern civilization and cities. Still I always feel a bit ambigous about all that is urban and civilized.

Somehow it seems that we always loose something when we gain something else. Privacy vs Lonelyness. Comfort vs Health. Technology vs Simplicity and understanding. Cinemas, theaters and museums vs Birds, fresh air and deep forests...

Worst is if we loose our affinity for nature, and understanding of the physical reality. It seems that the most civilized people think that we can live from increases in GNP regardless of how Mother Earth is hurting. Somehow we need to find a harmony and balance between the rural and urban. We have to be able to see the wholeness of the world...
